The router hardware and firmware handles all the connections and main firewall goodies ...
Everything works great ... except I think my Macs have become more vulnerable to viruses, because his machines are Windows thingys ... and we're on the same network ...
So far no noticeable problems on my machines ...
Also loving the connections offline over the network between my two Macs ...

If you follow the advice given by Dennis, you'll end up not using the router
which has a built in firewall, and have to use XP's built in firewall which
is not very good (and mostly gives a false sense of security).
