I would try this first: Start your machine, give OE plenty of memory in Get Info (I give 16384). Then hold down Option button and double click the OE app icon and say yes to everything. This will compact the data base and clean up many blank spaces in the files, sort of defragging the database. Throw away old messages and old database as instructed (you can easily find them through Sherlock - "old" - and choose date modified to bring them to top of window) This may work? Let us know.
