Actually, its only the cable that's been in a box that hasn't been used in
some time (well, ever, but its been in a box for several years).

Your suggestion is one of the first things I did :-)

The thing that is strange is that I booted the machine just fine off the
drive before swapping the memory (with the idea of changing 1 thing at a
time), then after swapping the memory it no longer will boot off the 16 bit
bus.  Yet it works from the 8 bit bus.  How can memory have anything to do
with it?  Yet that is what changed.

I have re-verified the memory is sitting correctly several times now.

I changed the CPU from a 604/233 to a G3/400 just prior, but it had rebooted
several times without any problems.

I'm so, uh, well, bewildered I guess.  And frustrated ;-)  And...

I guess it couldn't hurt to remove some of the memory and see what happens.
If that fixes it, though, where does that leave it?  I haven't a clue.
