I had problems like this with a Mac 2940UW card until I flashed its
firmware from 3.0.1 to 4.1. A 9.1 gig Seagate ST19171W (ultrawide) I was
trying to format before the firmware upgrade wouldn't mount afterwards.

So I connected it via 68 pin cabling with terminator to another PC 2940UW
(mounted on a PC) I bought just for the purpose and formatted it under DOS
(sector by sector - took two and a half hours). Replaced it back to the
7600/Mac 2940UW and got it mounted/initialized by Drive Setup.
