Hi, This might be OT, but I have an Apple-badged 1Gb Quantum Fireball hard disk (FRBLS 655-0141) hard drive as fitted to many of the PCI Powermac family. I want to use this drive in my Colour Classic (with LC575 l/b) but I'm worried that the drive might be dying and was hoping to get some insights from someone with a bit more experience with the things.
I had put the drive in an external case, and connected it to the Colour Classic for setting up as a prelude to installing it internally. The problem is, when I turn the hard disk on, instead of spinning up, it makes a soft 'click, click, click' sound. I initially assumed that the drive had fallen victim to stiction and was dead, but when I actually turn the Colour Classic to which it's connected on, shortly after the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen appears, the drive stops clicking and spins up as normal. I haven't yet put a HFS partition on it (the drive was previously used to house a Linux installation) so I can't be sure it will mount, but it does seem to work normally once it spins up. Can I trust this drive, or is it on its way out? On it's jumper block, jumpers PK and TE are both unjumpered. (The SCSI ID jumpers are set to ID 1) Thanks, Adam. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
