Those fireballs are very reliable drives. I haven't had one go bad on me yet, even though I've had quite a few newer drives go bad. It makes one wander why the company was sold.
Thats easy - there was/is not enough margin in hard drive manufacturing to make a profit AND make reliable drives. A friend of mine worked for a company provided lubricating oils (1) to several hard drive manufacturing plants in Malayasia and apparently many of them had to make other things (like mobile phone parts) on the side to make a profit.
