Apple-badged 1Gb Quantum Fireball hard disk (FRBLS 655-0141) use this drive in my Colour Classic (with LC575 l/b)
Funny thing about those old Fireballs... They just keep on running, often far beyond their rated MTBF. That rarely happens with today's HDs.
I had put the drive in an external case, and connected it to the Colour Classic for setting up as a prelude to installing it internally. The problem is, when I turn the hard disk on, instead of spinning up, it makes a soft 'click, click, click' sound. I initially assumed that the drive had fallen victim to stiction and was dead, but when I actually turn the Colour Classic to which it's connected on, shortly after the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen appears, the drive stops clicking and spins up as normal.
Hard drives don't spin until they're told to. This is normal, although many default configs/people override it. It's done to reduce the initial current draw (load) when a system boots.
The intial clicking sounds, btw, were the logic and head actuator self-tests.
