Greetings all, I know my 7200/120 (OS 8.1) could stand a good infusion of RAM anyway (it has only 48 MB presently), and that's on my "as soon as I can afford it" list, but I'm curious as to if this particular problem is specifically because I need more RAM or not.
I use ClarisWorks 4.0v4 as my word processing app, not only for writing, but also to read up certain TeachText/SimpleText documents I generate which are "too large" to be opened by TeachText/SimpleText. The document in particular I'm having trouble with is an AOL Instant Messenger chat log which contains a lot of "brainstorming" information I occasionally go back to for reference (to copy it out of the log and use it elsewhere). Up until last night, I had no such problem opening this document in Claris, but no matter what I did, I kept getting the prompt "Not enough memory to complete this application." I went into the folder, checked the document and see it's now up to 2.5 MB. Note that I keep Virtual Memory turned on, if that helps. Solutions I tried to get it to open were quitting out of every other app I had open at the time, using Get Info to allocate more memory to ClarisWorks (several times, using what I thought had to be seriously ridiculouly high settings for "Minimum " and "Preferred" given that the "suggested size" is only 1400K), and in the Memory control panel, also jumping the Disk Cache and Virtual Memory sizes to ridiculous proportions -- and yes I did remember to reboot the 7200 after making changes to the control panel. Anyway, even if we can say "never mind" about the fact that I'm only carrying 48 MB RAM on a machine which COULD carry 512 MB (if memory serves me correctly, hee hee) -- what's the problem with opening a document that is only 2.5 MB in size -- far less than 48? Especially when I don't have any other apps running to soak up RAM while I'm trying to do it? Do I need more RAM now after all?
