Do you know of any such text editors and can you recommend any in particular?
BBEdit Lite. It's free, it will open just about anything (including the Campbell's soup cans in your cupboard), and it will easily run on your system. I've been using it ever since I got my first Mac. It's an app everybody should have.
The only drawback is that 6.1.2 is the last version, as it's no longer being developed or supported. But that shouldn't be a problem--it's as rock-solid an app as I've ever seen.
