Sounds to me as though the file has become corrupted or ClarisWorks has
embedded a bunch of "info" in the file that causes the odd memory need.

You might download a copy of BBEdit Lite and open the file with that. Then
you can eliminate all but the text portion and end up with a file just a
few kilobytes in size.
