All right, I've made these changes to both the memory control panel and Claris itself, rebooted, and still can't open this document. The specific Claris settings, well, I had already changed "minimum" and don't recall the absolute original, but since "suggested" is 1400, I gave the "minimum" 2000 (I do regularly work with other large WP documents, although I've never had this problem on the 7200 before) -- as to the "preferred," I followed your advice and gave it 5000 (that counts as +4000).
If you've lost the real minimum, set it to the suggested, not bigger. Minimum is what the OS gives the app when the system is VERY memory poor - ie, it doesn't have enough to do the Preferred. It is the Preferred that you wnat to adjust.
<Make sure you have enough free disk space, for ClarisWorks' temp files.>
Hmmm, well, my 7200's original internal HD (1.2 GB) has 931.5 MB remaining available, and the second HD (1.9 GB) has 1.5 GB remaining available. Surely either of these must be enough free disk space to open a 2.5 MB document in Claris...? No?
Sounds good. Do a get-info on the drive to make sure.
<If that doesn't fix it, then the problem isn't the document size or memory. It's probably the text->ClarisWorks format translator cramping. In that case the best solution might be to install an alternative text editor that doesn't have TeachText/SimpleText's 32 KB limit. Then you can copy/paste the relivant pieces you need.>
Sounds good to me. Do you know of any such text editors and can you recommend any in particular?
As suggested in a later reply, check out BBEdit Lite. It's free and runs on System 7.5.5 thru X. I just downloaded it -- works nice. Personally, I use Alpha. It's a very very powerful tcl-based text editor; so powerful it can make a geeks eyes bleed. :) I don't think it runs on OS 8.1 any more tho.
