Thanks to Charlie and David Elmo for solution ideas. I may retreat to PS 5
on this machine. There are cool features in 7 namely the "Save for Web"
function in question but if it doesn't work well...

> First, you have 1G ram, right? OK. Is it good? How do you know? Test it
>extensively with Gauge Pro over thousands of iterations (not a few tens or
>hundreds).

I down loaded Gauge Pro and ran the memory test which almost immediately
failed with a ton of address errors. Too many to list here. This is past the
outside envelope (rather more a postcard than actual envelope) of my system
knowledge so I don't really know what to make of it.

> Second, are you giving PS lots of memory.

Done that. No diff.

> Third, try setting cache level to 0

Done that. No diff.

> Fourth, your nominated scratch disk is defragged well?

Norton and Tech Tool Pro As best as I know how to do.

> Is it A partition on the HD, another of which partition is one on which the PS
prgm resides?

Yes.

> Try nominating the first scratch disk on the same partion as the PS and second
> as the 1G one

Really? I thought the opposit optimum. Given my postcard sized
understanding, I'll try it tonight and let you know.

> Fifth, maybe turn off VM forcing PS to load all into RAM.

Never use VM.

> You have a Edit/Purge/All command? This how you are clearing all caches
> between saves?

Tried it. No Diff.

> And you are having this trouble with all sorts of files, not just one or two
> (1 MB files are very small and no, you should not be having such trouble)?

I create web views of work in progress for my clients (Illustrators and GA's
our there, try it as a Value Added Service, they love it.)

So all of the operations or done on files weighing, generally, under 200K.
Two reasons why this problem is annoying, one: it SHOULDN'T be happening and
two: this is work flow admin stuff done at the end of a work session when I
am tired and immpatiently awaiting dreamland.
