Photoshop 7 is bloated with so many features that eats up resources. Free up the scratch disk partitition so the unused portion of the entire disk is available for creating scratch files. You could trim Photoshop extensions you don't immediately need and trash preferences. The 8600's 50 MHz bus speed limit is too slow for the program to work efficiently. Try version 5 or 6.
