Well, let me say I use 5 for everyday work (have 6 but it is slow to load
and not as quick to operate as 5 on my 7600 running on a G3/4 upgrade at
about 400 with 500MB RAM on 9.0.4 (I had issues with 9.1 re my many self
programmed "actions" using function keys, so went back to 9.0.4) I use 6 on
another machine occasionally to make web archives). As for 7? But perhaps I
can jog you to find the cause?

First, you have 1G ram, right? OK. Is it good? How do you know? Test it
extensively with Gauge Pro over thousands of iterations (not a few tens or
hundreds).

Second, are you giving PS lots of memory. Try it, you have it to burn, give
the program tons, 200 MB or even more (you can scale back later if this
works),

Third, try setting cache level to 0 and also to a higher number and observe
any effect.

Fourth, your nominated scratch disk is defragged well? It is A partition on
the HD, another of which partition is one on which the PS prgm resides? Try
nominating the first scratch disk on the same partion as the PS and second
as the 1G one (see prefs. Simply excuse me if the prefs are quite different
to 5 and 6)

Fifth, maybe turn off VM forcing PS to load all into RAM.

You have a Edit/Purge/All command? This how you are clearing all caches
between saves?

And you are having this trouble with all sorts of files, not just one or two
(1 MB files are very small and no, you should not be having such trouble)?

Just a few things to look at, let us know...

David Elmo
