The 7300 and 7600 are the most upgradeable since they have 3 PCI slots, a processor card slot, and 8 DIMM slots. And these are the only two that will run OS X (after upgrades). You can yank one of the 7200 logic boards and replace it with the 7600 board. They use the same case, power supply, and drives. The only difference between the 7300 and the 7600 is the latter has built-in A/V I/O capability. They can use each other's processor cards. Also, I have considered possibly selling the machines and parts I have to purchase a slightly newer machine (i.e. B&W G3, or early G4). Maybe that is a better option. At any rate, I'd be glad to hear what I can do with these machines, what OS is recommended for them, and so on. Here is what I have:
PowerMac 5400/180 (32MB RAM, Ethernet, all-in-one machine) PowerMac 7200/75 (48MB RAM) PowerMac 7200/120 (Won't power up, no RAM/VRAM installed) PowerMac 7300/200 (160MB RAM) Workgroup Server 8150/110 (~96MB) PM 7600/132 Logic Board and CPU card
Machines I have yet to inspect... PowerMac 6100/66 DOS Compatable Performa 6115CD (I think)
OS which I have: MacOS 7.5.5 MacOS 7.6.1 MacOS 8 MacOS 9 MacOS X.3
However, the cost of decently upgrading either the 7300 or 7600 would probably cost more than finding a B&W G3/PCI G4 or better yet and AGP G4.
