I have found since that you can take the piece of metal out of the frame right behind the upper drive bay to open room for the ribbons to go. I saw a pic somewhere and they said the piece of metal is not welded or bolted in, just pressed in somehow. I haven't pulled my old beige box out to see what exactly there is, but it's the corner piece with the holes for an additional fan. Apparently it slides up and out.
I've been meaning to pull it apart to see anyway. Let me know if you have any luck, I'll check back with you after I pulled my cover off.
