I ran into the same problem when installing the controller card for extra
harddrives in my PowerMac 7300. I couldn't figure out what to do, so have
been running the 7300/500 with the case off for several years now. Is there
a safe method to put the cover back on without pinching the ribbon?

you can gently hammer loose the piece of metal behind the diskdrives, and in front of the cpu card, and lead the ribbon through there ... it is just pressed into place
