I've ruled out the hard drive as the problem. Even if a hard drive is bad, I should at least get a video signal and a Mac icon with a question mark on it (since it's looking for a valid system folder). My problem is that I don't even get that far. No video and no power up chime. But power is being supplied to the computer and its drives.
Maybe it's the scsi bus itself? Do you have external scsi devices? Try disconnecting them. Have you tried to use the other scsi bus on the motherboard? Does it start up from a floppy?
My 8600 acts sometimes like that. No chime, no video, just the power light. I think it's the long and thin scsi cable that came with my scanner. In my case disconnecting the external scsi chain (or just the scanner) or changing the order of the devices (even back and forth) has helped -- until the next cold boot. Haven't had time to investigate that any further, though.
