Recently, I've been asked to repair two Power Mac 8500s that power up but fail to boot. On each machine, there's no boot sound, there's no launch from the hard drive (it spins briefly and then stops), and the monitor remains black.
I've replaced the motherboard batteries (3.6-volt lithium) with new ones. I've also swapped out power supplies; reseated all the memory modules, processor cards and PCI cards; checked all of the cables; and reset the CUDA switch. And still there's nothing.
Does anyone out there have any clues?

No, just some guesses ! :- )
Are the machines from the same source ? Do you know anything about how they died ? Have you thoroughly cleaned each and every connector, slot and card edge? You might try pulling the AC and batteries, then push the CUDA for about a minute. Some listers even say this must be done repeatedly. Has any other hardware been changed ? The lack of a startup sound has always been CUDA or card seating related on my own machines. Because you say both machines have nothing at all on startup, no sound or test screens showing errors or error colors this is especially tough. Can you swap parts between machines to see if anything at all will make a difference ? Any sign of life would help. What seems odd is that both machines show the same lack of life. What are the probabilities of that ? Try a careful reexamination of the DIMMs and CPUs. Do this in bright light or with a flashlight. an uneven or not fully seated card may be hard to spot in the 8500 case. That's one of the reasons why I went to a 9600 as my tower of choice.
Whatever it is it will be the last thing you check !
