I would try slapping in a Mac OS 9, or whatever you have CD and see if it comes up, then check your hard drive from there.
Is it even spinning up?

Ron

Thanks for all the suggestions I've received so far on my two problem PM
8500s -- the ones that power up but don't give the chime or provide any
video output (what are the changes of getting two of these with the same
problem within a couple of weeks?):

The first 8500 had been upgrade with a Sonnet G3 processor. I've replaced
the power supply, reseated all of the RAM and VRAM, made sure all of the
connections are secure, replaced the battery, reseated one PCI card (for USB
connectivity), reseated the Sonnet processor, reset the CUDA switch and even
tried the original processor.

And the results? Nothing -- or the same ... a power on light, an
all-too-brief spin-up of the hard drive and that's it.

Any other suggestions before I give up on this first 8500? I'm just getting
started with the second one.

I am toying with the idea of adapting an ATX power supply.
XLR8yourmac has the article in its archives.

I have done this successfully on a 9600/200 using the above resource. It was a very satisfying project. Once the power supply was working it was necessary to give the contacts on the processor card a vigorous scrub with an eraser to get the start up chime.
