Average is about 3.5 K per sec, consider that good and not too frustrating. It does not matter whether you have an imac, our macs, a G4 or 5, or a NASA supercomputer. The high figure you mention is to do with the speed the modem communicates the short distance to the computer, one can usually forget about this.
