Thanks for the replies.... I know the phone lines both in the house and out of the house are usually the culprits for slow connections. What I really wanted to know if anyone out there was getting decent speeds on their 5400 macs. In other words if I had decent phone lines and decent external modem I should be able to match the 47,333 speeds on an iMac.

When using the Best Data drivers the best I could ever do was 47,600 ( kbps ?). I have used the Earthlink Mac modem driver for several years and Remote Access always reports 57, 600. I'm sure someone will challenge this as an erroneous mark but I have tried different drivers side by side and it is definitely the fastest. It even worked with one of the other ISPs before I could get a local dialup number for Earthlink here. I don't know about the 5400 or how modem handling would be different for it.
