I just can't believe it.
I found that the Mother of all the Sources of Problems with Cubase in my PM9600 was a stupid "Use Apple SerialDMA when available" checkbox in the Preferences box of OMS Setup.
It was checked (by default), but I found that if I uncheck it... no more freezes. AT ALL!
Back to a hot Italian summer then... :-)
