Hi Jeff,

The Sonnet Trio has some compatibility issues. It may not be a problem in your system, but it also might. I suspect that the IDE cards whose firmware was written by Firm-Tek all exhibit these issues and the Trio is amongst those cards.

They are generally good cards, but in a system which already has compatibility issues, I would hesitate to add one. On the other hand, if you can buy from a place with a 30 day money back guarantee, and test it out in that time frame, it's worth a try.

I like the Acard brand IDE cards for rock solid stability. For example, the AEC-6280 is nice and costs about $75.

A slot saving card I have been tempted to try, but have not, is the SIIG USB/Firewire/100 Mbps Ethernet card. It's not made for a Mac, but the USB and Firewire bits should work wtih the Apple drivers and the ethernet part is based on a Mac supported Real Tek chipset.

Thank you again for the reply.

I was considering the Tempo Trio because I thought to try the IDE way for solving the MIDI data overload problem, which I solved in another way instead (by disabling that "Use Apple SerialDMA when available" option).

Anyway, I think I'll need an USB port for my PM9600, and I have a couple of PCI USB cards laying around, got for free. I still didn't try to use them with any USB device, although one of these cards has been residing in the PM9600 for some time (I pulled it out for simplyfing the sistem when I was hunting for the cause of the crashes).

One is a humble unbranded 2-port PCI USB card with an Opti FireLink chip. The other card... I have to check, I lent it to a friend. I heard some of these cards can lead to compatibilty issues (!), so I'll try them both carefully observing the behaviour of the system before and after the installation.

By the way, now that my PM9600 G4/700 is beautifully stable again even with Cubase (it always was with all the other applications, anyway), I can't say anything but good things about the machine.

Definitely the BEST PCI Mac one can get ;-)
