I am no expert on the 9600 but I would check the following.

PRAM battery, when was it last replaced. This can cause the "?" and other problems during system restarts

Your hard drive is probably on the way out. A hard drive is good for 5 years in my opinion. After 5 years its on borrowed time
Same goes for CDROMS

CPU or Memory might be breaking down, possible but not likely.

Have you installed or replaced any hardware components

Have you installed any new appz or system patches

Just as a quick idea, when was the last time you opened up your 9600. The 9600 is no spring chicken. It is possible that over time it has filled with dust, pet hair, dirt, paper clips, staples, etc, etc and the mother board and other components are covered in dirt and over heating. Check the functionality of all fans in your case, power supply, case, possible CPU and graphic cards. Fans last 20 years or 10 minutes. They may be dirty and not moving the air properly.

The 9600 is a sweet machine, it should have a couple of years left.

Is it possible to put a Beige G3 mother board into a 9600 case?

To clean your 9600 out, take the unit outside, get a can of compressed air.

Open the case and BLAST away. A dry cloth might be required to clean off dirt build ups that air does not remove. Be careful not to unseat the processor, pci cards or memory.

I wish you luck

Replace the hard drive, do a fresh install and restore your appz.
