With all your frustrations and the money spent, you might have been better
off buying a used B&W, G4, or even a new low end G5. I've also found
frustrations with the PCI Macs (beige desktops and towers) when upgrading
them, but I'm not going to compare my upgraded 9600 G4 to my B&W G4. I just
find that I can trust my B&W more when running Panther and editing videos
via iMovie. As for Adobe Premiere, I've used v.6 on a 1GHz Celeron and it
wasn't a great experience either. Don't blame the Mac, blame Adobe for a
so-so piece of software. Knock on wood, the only quirk on my B&W was the on
board ATA port which was resolved when I popped in an ATA-133 card.

My specs:
B&W w/an XLR8 G4/500 (oc'd to 600)
768MB RAM (mix of PC100's and PC 133's)
3 ATA hard drives (80GB, 2x40GB)
ATI Radeon 7000
USB2.0/Firewire card
ACARD ATA-133 PCI adapter card
LG DVD+/- RW (DL)
Internal fax modem

(The RAM, USB/Firewire card, LG writer, the hard drives were all bought at a
PC discount store so compatibility is pretty good with PC hardware)

Don't give up on the Macs, it all depends on what you want to do with them,
then choose the right model for the job.
