When a program attempts to access the Internet for the first time, ZoneAlarm
displays an alert pop-up box on the screen and asks if you want to give that
program permission to access the Internet. You have a choice of Yes or No
and a check box to "Remember the answer..." If you checked the "Remember.."
box and the Yes answer then both Internet and Local Zone are shown with a
check mark under "Allow Server". If you checked the "Remember.." box and
the No answer then both Internet and Local Zone are shown with an X mark under
"Allow Server". If you didn't check the "Remember" box, then a question mark
is shown under "Allow Connect"
ZoneAlarm also controls server applications. Server applications listen for
incoming connection requests and respond to those requests. By checking the
Allow Server checkbox you can limit server applications to be accessible
from your Local Zone or prevent them altogether.
One example is when you launch an application that wants to accept incoming
connections, i.e. act as a server to the Internet, you will be presented
with the option of allowing this application to act as a server.
Communication applications like ICQ and NetMeeting typically require server
rights in order to function properly with ZoneAlarm.
