In the wee hour of 01:02 PM 7/6/01 -0400, bequeathed such tales as these:
>8 Gig hard drive in machine for 2+ years.
>At start up, now only recognizes 1.9 Gigs.
>Ran scandisk & defrag.
>Still only 1.9 gigs.
>What happened?
>
>DC

The drive may be becoming unstable with either bad clusters and/or
sectors. I have a WD 4 gb Caviar that does this occasionally, right now
its says 4 gb's but 3 weeks ago it was 1.9 gb and it's FAT32. I ran Norton
Disk Doctor and Spin Rite and found a lot of bad sectors. HTH
