Again many thanks, also to Kelly for making the URL clickable.    I downloaded the M$ 
patch, but this turned out to be only
the same updated smgr.dll I had previously put into Windows System.  This time, it was 
placed in Windows\Options, but System
Restore still doesn't work.    I think I'll soon be asking for advice on a format and  
clean install of ME !   At least, with
a CD burner now, I can transfer a heap of folders on to CD or CDRW.
