try going into the Tools menu in Word (I guess you need to use the /a switch
to get in)....in the tools menu, check two things....go to Macr>Macros and
see if there are any macros in there....if so, delete them.....also go to
Templates and Addins and get rid of anything in there (uncheck
them).....sometimes they are tied together and you can't get rid of one
without the other.....so try them in reverse order if you have to

when you said you couldn't delete the file that was in the startup folder,
what did you mean?  did you get an error message?  it sounds to me like this
file is somehow causing problems.  and you HAVE to have a normal.dot
file.....Word can't open without this....when you delete it, Word simply
creates a new one
