yep...you are correct that Word may not be creating a new normal.dot since
you are only getting in with the /a switch......did you try rechecking both
those macros and seeing if that fixes it?

sounds to me that if you are having those additional file problems that this
is more than a Word problem. Are you able to open any other Office
programs? like Excel or Access?

at this point I really don't know what else to tell you....the fact that you
are getting a vbe error means that there is something screwy in visual
basic....if it was Word with the problem, I would think the error would be
vbA, not vbE

probably if you run the Office Detect and Repair (if it's Word 2k or 2002),
you would get your normal.dot file back.....or you could just restore it
from the recycle bin

I'm still wondering if reinstalling the scanner software would fix it

otherwise, I'm thinking it might be time to format your hard drive and
install Windows from scratch :-(

Linda, I did the above as instructed and found only unchecked two files.
WFWORDZK.DOT and FineReader5.DOT which is from that startup file I can not
delete. When I go thru the explorer to the startup file and then right click
on FineReader5 then select Delete it say are you sure you want this in the
recycle bin I click yes and then a message comes up saying you cannot delete
this file, Access Denied. That is why I uninstalled FineReader but that file
remains.
Is it possible because I can not get into word that the Normal.DOT is not
recreated? Does it recreate when I go in thru the switch /a. If it does I
can
not find it thru the find routine.
Thanks for hanging in there with me.
There is only one more factor that has been found but it is with Windows. I
do a File Check and it comes up with 10 files that are missing or corrupt in
Windows but I have been unable to get them restored thru the Win 98 disc as
it keeps asking me for what folder and I have been unable to find the files
in any folder on my Win98 CD.
