Helene you must not be seeing my posts on this. :-) A few
days ago I mentioned to you; that I mentioned to you BEFORE
about the updates. I suggested you look in the archives for my
posts on this topic. I've posted it more than once in great
detail and it's too much to type again. I'll say again,
severely abbreviated, do NOT install ALL of the windows updates
without FIRST reading ALL about them. ONLY install them if you
are POSITIVE you need them. Just because the update site says
you need an update, further reading (click the "read more"
links) will show you DO NOT on many occasions. This is both
critical updates and other updates. On many occasions the
updates have really screwed up my PC's, making them either
unstable or really slowing them down, or both. ONLY install
ONE at a time setting the system restore function before each.
Don't install anymore for a few days until you are POSITIVE
your PC is still working as it should. This is the only way to
make sure your PC operates as it should. The exceptions are
the updates that block wo-rms or vir-uses, those you want and
they are ok to install.

Your AV software should be updated about TWICE A DAY. 3 times
recently I got viru-ses or wor-ms because on each occasion
there was an update only a matter of hours after I just
updated! You can never update your AV software too much. Make
it a habit to check for updates every time you think about it.
Don't let it (or windows update) automatically check for
updates because this is just another thing you'll have to have
running in the background potentially slowing things down and
possibly causing errors....not to mention the spying these
services do on your computing. Disable these. Try to get in
the habit of checking a couple of times a day for AV software
updates, and about once a week for Windows updates (after
you've got all the updates installed that you're sure you need)
. Personally I don't want ANY of my PC's "constantly sending
info back to MS on everything I do", and the more of these
services you have disabled, the better. It used to not bother
me, but they have gotten MUCH worse about it since XP and they
sell or make available this info to other vendors.

Which reminds me of XP's native search. Disable that. Do not
use the indexing service. Use the "classic search" disable
that "dog" you see. Every time you search for ANYTHING on your
OWN hard drive, it sends what you're searching for back to MS!
You could train your firewall to block that, but XP's search
sucks anyway, it doesn't work. It takes minutes to find the
simplest of file whether index service is on or off. I found a
perfect program to replace it which I will post momentarily.
