No, that's a misconception. I used to believe that myself up
until about a year ago when I started to investigate the update
site. Not only did I find that MS is indeed spying on visitors
contrary to their statement, but that many of the updates are
not needed, and some were so MS could gather even more info
about you. The "available updates list" is a GENERIC list, it
is not a "Custom list for your computer" as most believe. Even
with all the hard drive & computer scanning the site does, it
does not do a very good job of determining what all you have
installed/enabled/disabled of which all are determining factors
as to which specific updates a computer ACTUALLY needs.

This is why for each update it says you need, one must click
the "read more" links and go to that page, the "expand the
trees" (click on the + signs) for things like "technical
details", "FAQ's", and of course "mitigating factors" which is
usually the place where it says if you really need it or not
according to what you have installed/enabled/disabled.

XP Pro has the system restore feature, Home does not. I don't
know of the other differences since I've never used Home.

When you have any questions about OE, just go to the "options"
under "tools" in the toolbar where you can most of your
questions answered. There is a "security" tab there for
enabling attachments. This is an IE6 option not limited to XP.

Hi Clint.

I have seen them.. and read them.. but. I was told.. by someone
else on this
list(not sure who it was).. but I think - actually by several
people.. that
I SHOULD install ALL the Critical Updates IMMEDIATELY.. Thats
the 2nd thing
I should do.. after I install the vir** program.. and get that
running.

So, I was unsure of what to do. and figured if it were
"critical updates".
that I 'should install them'.. Alot of conflicting info. and
for someone
(like me). who's unsure.. and kinda still nervous about XP. ..
I was trying
to do what I was "supposed to do".. right away. and not have a
problem
again..(like getting that dreaded Wor*.. 10 minutes after being
on the
internet. with a brand new computer..

I dont' have the windows update. enabled to do it
automatically.. That I
have turned OFF though.

As far as the McAffee. I do update.. every day. but now. I'll
go to it
several times a day like you say.. But I have to tell you. when
I've gone to
it. in the last day or so. It says.. all updates are "up to
date".. I have
been running a vir** scan every other day. I think I'll go back
to once a
day for that as well. and continue checking for updates as
well.

I had seen that dog.. Didnt' know what the heck it was.. Now I
know.. So
much to learn. with this XP. and when I asked a tech about it..
he
himself(at Dell) said, he has XP 'not'. XP Pro.. and it's a
different
program... Why did I get PRO.?? I have no clue.. LOL..

But all in all. I do like this new operating system. Its
different. and it
will take alot of time to learn it.. especially,, when viewing
attachments..(can't seem to figure out how to do that in
Outlook Express)..

My son-in-law - sent me the copy of the book cover.(he's almost
finished
with the book, writing a book about the Yankee Player(from
Japan). and he
sent it to me. I was able to figure out. how to click on it.
save it. to a
'picture program' and enlarge it.. (similiar to when I had
Corel).. but this
is right here on the computer.

So, I'm Playing and Learning. and while it's a headache at
times.. I have to
admit.. I'm enjoying it..<smile>

Thanks so much for everything.
