Yeah but that may at least give you a starting point. :) I don't use sound cards that much and I've always had the Windows sounds disabled (I find them annoying ;), but a full-duplex card may be what you need, although I thought the AWE64 was full duplex....maybe it's not. A full duplex card shouldn't be needed though for normal Windows use. You could have a problem elsewhere, so temp. disabling the sounds may give you a direction, or maybe try another card if you can but I'd do that second due to potential driver file conflicts/corruption.
FWIW, I had an odd problem with the integrated audio on an Aopen AX37 Plus. The audio for ANY program would not work unless I FIRST activated ANY of the Windows sounds! When this happens the Windows sounds won't play and if I try using a program like Winamp that needs the sound card I get a message saying that the sound card is being used by another program. I know I could get a multichannel sound card, but this problem really has me curious. The sound card is a Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold. I haven't been able to find a pattern that causes the problem but I have an idea it might have something to do with the sound card being accessed at the same time that the hard drive is being accessed.
