For me in Eudora, I can view the formatting of all messages regardless, simply right clicking to view the source of Harold's message brings up a menu from which I can view the source. You can do this as well in OE by going to File, Properties, Details, Message Source ....
Most messages have formatting of some kind.

That was a plain text email, and in (OE at least) there is no way to 'view the source' of a plain text email. I was able to "copy and paste" it ok, it appeared the same as when it was posted, but I'd still like to know what he was trying to do with that 'vertical line symbol' () :-) I don't see it in your reply, your email program evidently 'converted' it or removed it. I'll send you a screen shot of what I and probably other OE users saw. -Clint

Clint, for any special characters you see that you want to copy, usually you just use the right alt key plus whatever code is given. So if you look at the source of Harold's email you will see the opening line with "Hugh again," which in the code view shows up as "Hugh  again," then you use your right alt key plus 005 (use your number pad on your keyboard) or alt + 005.
Or you can do drag and drop from the character map if you use a compatible program.
I had to learn all this working for some French clients a while back and it does come in handy a lot.
