Have you submitted this issue to the T'bird developers community? It could be a possible addition in the future.

Unlike OE which does not come equipped with it's own spell checker, unless one installs an MS word processor. It's too bad OE cannot work with other word processors to get this functionality, or at least have M$ include one.
T'bird is excellent for searching mail as well, it is the fastest for mail clients, especially when you get vast mail files. I have about 1 gig of mail and the search tool is so helpful. The spam controls by way of Bayesian filters are some of the best and they are quite intuitive, I get 95% accuracy without regular tweaking, more if I keep at it.

Interesting Jeff, the reason I stopped using OE and Outlook too (besides the rampant security bugs at the time) was the lack of functionality. And when I could get them to work properly they couldn't do it for long.
How many DSL companies do you use, or is that a typo?
All my email providers require authentication as well, some also use SSL. And T'Bird handles them all equally well.
It will be interesting when MS releases there anti virus app and anti spam app too, if they will be integrated with there email apps.
