Yes. I just tested (also on a Mac), and it worked, either by setting PDC_FONT, or just leaving pdcfont.bmp in the current directory. The behavior was the same for both sdl1 and sdl2. Note that it all works differently if you build with WIDE=Y -- in that case, you need TrueType fonts.
