By now several kind people have offered very good recommendations.
Here are some of mine:
Configure a print queue with Windows 2000 SP2 and SPM ports. This
improves printing resources and management. There are several
configuration options that should be tuned as well.
Increase the workstation RAM to 512 MB.
Configure the spool file to be on a separate partition or make sure you
have at least 4 GB of free space for the spool to access.
Select a PCL5e driver whenever possible. If your printer does not have a
native PCL5e print driver and you can afford to abandon the special
features of your MFD, configure a print queue with the HP 5Si driver,
set at 300 dpi.
Rely on a high speed network.
Hardcode your printer for 100 MB, not auto-sense.
For TIFF printing, purchase a high-speed print utility like IPROPrint
(DocuLex and Z-Print offer similar tools). Set your batches to 50 pages
or less.
Install the MAX of RAM on each printer
There are many variables which will affect printing.
This is too long of a discussion for on on-line response.
BTW...
PDF files are simple or complex and you rarely know which until you look
under the hood (or try to print).
Many vendor RIPS do not process complex or large PDF files very quickly. I
have several vendor models we rely on and have prepared special print queue
configurations to overcome their anomalies.
If you wish some more off-line printer configuration opinions, please
contact me.

OK, here is the info on our set up.
We are running on Windows 2000 workstations, peer to peer. We are printing
to an HP4050 and an HP2200d. The workstations are fairly new Dells with 256
memory, running at 2.4. We also print to a Konica 7031 copy machine that is
supposed to output at 30PPM but it seems to be even slower with it. The
Konica has the max printer memory installed. These are all PCL and we are
printing from Adobe Acrobat 5.
What else do I need to tell you? Let me know and I will get it. I sincerely
appreciate the help.
