I also work with Quark (4.1) and Mac OS. When I want to get art from pdf
files I use the arrow (graphic tool). Hold down control and get a
contextural menu- choose edit. The art will launch whichever program you
have selected in your preferences to open which kind of file it is. I have
Photoshop for raster and Illustrator for vector.

Once the image is open in either program I save the file in that program as
tif or eps. It can then be put in Quark document.
