Try this:
Restart mac with extensiona off (hold down shift key on restart).   Then
trash Printer Preferences.   (You can keep this in a folder on your HD if
you're scared of messing up).
Then restart as normal and try again.   Preferences are such pesky little
critters and get flaky easily.
