We're Mac based also, iDisk is a Mac based service offered by Apple that allows you to FTP among other things. There is a $99.00 charge for a 1 year subscription. It sounds like you might be on an older system, you can still setup a system for FTP fairly easily for a lot less, www.versiontracker.com is a good place to start.
We have a guy in the office who still has AOL customers who won't switch to the FTP service. Here is what he does:
1. Only send one file at a time.
2. Keep the file under 3 megs.
3. Use the .pdf extension
4. Distill for Acrobat 3.0 compatability.
