In 1998, I started to see the benefits of Acrobat...even though the version
was only 3.0. During the next four years, I worked for three different
printers and pre-press houses. I fought tooth and nail with each one to
adopt an Acrobat workflow. The first company simply refused to adopt the PDF
format which meant that files had to be physically transported to the plant,
rather than sent vis ftp. This caused hours of delays for each job, and
chewed up a great deal of my time needlessly.

One liked PDF, but didn't have the resources to upgrade the rip so many
PDF's failed. The owner also didn't understand why I had to spend so much
time teaching people how to make PDFs (remember, this was with version 3 and
into the early stages of version 4).

The third, and last prepress house, had no vision. They couldn't see the
handwriting on the wall.

Many people in the printing industry find it tough to keep pace with the
technology. The capital investment in this industry is unbelievable, every
advance in technology requires training and lost revenue (especially due to
downtime with trying to make people's files work), and competition is great,
meaning narrow profit margins. Also, printers were forced (by default) to
install digital prepress departments, which was unfamiliar territory in
relation to traditional camera and strip ops, and heavy metal (presses and
bindery).

We have people on the list who have trouble talking bosses into spending $99
for an Acrobat upgrade. Not everyone can afford the cost of keeping pace, or
if they can, are willing to spend the money without a battle.

Leonard,

Have you ever worked for a printer/prepress house? Just curious.
