I am with you 100% we have Prinergy from Creo which runs on an Adobe
Extreme Rip, which by the way is a Level 3 Adobe Branded Postscript Rip.
We retired our level 2 rip harlequin only a couple of years ago. We ask
that our customer's write out fat postscript, and distill everything at a
1.3 compatibility level regardless whether they have Acrobat 4.0, 5.0 or
6.0. From my understanding Adobe created transparency more for the web
than anything else. These pdf files straight out of Indesign, Illustrator,
and photoshop are great for the web, but I wouldn't recommend printing
them. These files seem to be unpredictable, and that is why we ask our
customer's to use distiller. I too would like to know of a Rip that
supports transparency in a predictable manner.

As a printer who has the latest most up to date RIP,( AGFA Apogee
series
3,soon moving to Apogee X)
Pdf's prepared by exporting from any application do not always print
correctly, (if at all). That's not saying that all files made in this
manner
behave this way. They are typically more problematic Than the same files
prepared by writing separate postscript, and them distilling. I don't think
Indesign CS is the problem, approximately 25% of our clients are using it
to produce their magazines with no problems whatsoever.( same with Quark
6).
I have also talked to several other printers using different workflow
software and rips, and the problems are the same. If anyone can name a more
up to date RIP, that supports pdf 1.5 please tell me. Untill then ,We will
always accept jobs that are created with indesign CS or Quark6, and inform
our customers about the problems that could occur...and try not to let FUD
ruin our day.

cheers
