Sorry for the delay in my reply, but i stopped following the thread.

better at 4000dpi, although not as good as an imacon.

I have also tried another FS4000 and it was the same as mine. i scan my
images with version 1.03 of the scanning software and then save them in PS
7.0 as an uncompressed tif.

It appears that having FARE enabled makes no difference, it does seem to
reduce the noise if i scan the image in vuescan with a long exposure pass.

However all this , its still a great scanner for the price.
