>Maybe I just a bum scanner with a ton of sensor noise?<

maybe. i've looked through all of my recent scans for areas of slowly
changing tone and just can't see the amount of chroma noise you have.
however, i have a Nikon 4000ED scanner and i just don't know if it is your
individual scanner or the Canon scanner in general.

i'm uploading to http://www,bestweb.net/~hchong/temp what i see when i use
my scanner. there are 4 PNG images. the raw image has had a color profile
applied and Auto Contrast run on it before being downconverted from
16-bits/channel to 8-bits/channel. the other three are the same but Digital
ICE was also enabled during scanning. no other processing was done. this
isn't a keeper and so i haven't done anything else with the image. as a
bonus, for those who head over there, i have a screen saver containing many
of my images in the same directory. warning: all 4 images add up to over 60
megabytes and the screen saver is another 8 megabytes.
