When i first got my FS4000 scanner i was quite unhappy with the amount of noise, so i scanned a neg on both my FS4000 and a friends Nikon LS4000 and the nikon has no where near the same level of noise as the FS4000.
I think it shows its self most apparently as noise with black and white film, I use mostly tri-x and have a good feel for what the grain looks like and when it a neg is scanned with the FS4000 it definately doesnt look like standard Tri-X grain. Where as when a Tri-X neg is scanned on an LS4000 it looks like Tr-X grain. I think there is also less noise with Vuescan because it doesnt apply any sharpening like the FilmGet software does. At this stage i'm still inclined to believe its noise.
