The fish as a symbol of Christianity goes back to the Greek writing of
the word phrase 'Iesous Christos Theou Huios Soter', which means
'Jesus Christ God's Son Savior'. In Greek characters this spells
ICHTYS, the Greek word for fish.
This was used in the very early years of the Christian Church (we're
talking the early hundreds AD here). It was sometimes used as a
secret symbol. It may also have been an allusion to the Sermon on the
Mount, when the bible tells us that Jesus fed the multitude with five
loaves and two fishes.

You haven't met my father in law then...

Very well said sir, and a good example of how to have a civilised
debate.
