FWIW,
        With winder # 1321682 if the winder is ON, pressing the winder
trigger will turn the metering on (and shoot a frame if you press hard
enough) regardless of whether or not the camera is turned on. I tried
this on five different MXs and they all worked the same way.

The MX motordrive/ battery pack M combo works in the same way.

The Winder MX manual does not say what will happen if the camera is
turned off. However, I think it is wrong to say that the camera is
turned off. The shutter button lock is just a mechanical device to lock
the shutter button in place and you can lock it off or on. Locking it in
the "on" position is recommended for long exposures using "B".

After a bit more fiddling I found that you can turn the meter on by
shorting the two outside contacts in the group of three on the bottom of
the camera. I guess the meter has two parallel switch circuits, one in
the body and one that connects to the winder or motordrive.
