Yes. In Av mode, with the lens disengaged, the shutter speed change automatically as you change the aperture on the lens. In manual mode, with the lens disengaged, you get a new meter reading every time you hit the green button, so if you change the aperture (via the aperture ring on the lens) and then hit the green button you will get the correct reading and the shutter speed changes accordingly. So drilling a new locking hole IS a workable solution (for some people). It doesn't work with the DOF preview button however.
