Hello Tanya,
As to people not buying Pentax just for lenses - I chose the *istD
body on the merits of the body, not the lenses. In the world of
digital, the body does make much more difference than for film
cameras.

When getting the *istD, this is how I outfitted it with lenses:
Pentax F 17-28/3.5-4.5 Fisheye
Tokina AF193 19-35/3.5-4.5 - Would have considered Tamron 17-35/2.8-4
if it had been available - it should be shortly and I will
     consider it.
Pentax FA* 24/2.0
Tamron 28-75/2.8 DI
Pentax FA 50/1.4
Tamron 90/2.8 Macro
Pentax FA 135/2.8
Tamron 70-300/4-5.6 (already owned)
Kenko 1.4 AF convertor

As you can see, Tamron was a popular choice for me. I did purchase
two new ones. One is the 90/2.8 macro and the other is the
28-75/2.8 DI lens. Both are optically very good and fairly light
for their speed. But they feel mechanically solid.
Being a more manual focus kind of person, I really like how both of
them focus. They are not too loose feeling and very comfortable to
focus with. If you have any questions about them, feel free to ask.
Or if you want to see some pics from them, let me know.
